This week the thoughts all came from a list of best first lines in novels. These just struck me and were not too long. I make no claim about them being the best, or my favorites or if they belong on such a list or even if they are correct. I can say they made good material for this week’s thought, pen, ink and paper quotes. In fact, I do say that.

“Ships at a distance have every man’s wish on board.” from Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston.

Pen: Pelikan M205 M nib
Ink: Lamy Dark Lilac
Paper: Clairefontaine Pupitre

I like the way the top of the h, b, and l hook over to the right and the little flourish at the end of many characters like the a.

“I had the story, bit by bit, from various people and as generally happens in such cases, each time it was a different story.” from Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton.

Pen: Franklin-Christoph Model 02 Anderson Pens Edition XF nib
Ink: Platinum Carbon Black
Paper: Tomoe River Paper - white

I had to live with the smear because there was not time to redo it. I don’t always like all caps, but this style is nice. My favorite letters are the A, E and R.

Pen: Lamy AL Star 1.1 nib
Ink: Lamy Ocean Blue
Paper: Rhodia dotPad

I got a lot better shading towards the end. I was going slow on the actual quote and that lays down more ink.

Pen: Franklin-Christoph 31
Ink: Paradise Pens Pink
Paper: Stone Paper

This is the brightest pink I have come across. This Stone Paper, that appears to be the brand, comes from a notebook they sell at our company store. It seems to perform much better than some stone papers. I had various people try it at the 2017 Atlanta Pen Show and they all thought it was decent. It does have a little feedback but as you can see, no feathering. Unfortunately, I don’t know how you can get some.

Pen: Kaweco Sport F nib
Ink: Pilot Iroshizuku Kon-Peki
Paper: Nock Co Dotgrid Notecard

The Nock Co cards are good for all but the longest quotes. The Sport is very reliable. It travels with me a lot but goes unused for days. But when called on, it starts right away and writes without skipping.
